This year, TMSP will induct 38 new Scholars into our family. The impressive group of young leaders possesses an average GPA of 3.45, and is comprised of 68% African Americans, 21% Hispanic, 8% Asian American and 3% Middle Eastern American students.
The Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program (TMSP) was founded in 1998. It was aptly named after Taylor Michaels, the inspiring Chief Operating Officer for Magic Johnson Enterprises who passed away during that year. Taylor was passionate about minority youth having the access and support to attend college. The Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program includes five core components offered to each recipient for four years: Scholarship Awards, Leadership Development, Mentorship, Internships, and Technology resources.
Selected Scholars demonstrate strong academic potential, yet face challenging socioeconomic conditions hindering full expression of their talents. In the past 12 years, the Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program has provided over $3,000,000 in financial assistance and support to more than 350 students, funding 128 Undergraduate Scholars in 2010-2011 alone.
Held each summer in Los Angeles, our annual Leadership Conference provides the tools and resources to support the Career and Character Development of our Undergraduate Scholars via workshops, guest speakers, and events. The Magic Johnson Foundation views leadership as a process and a tool for creating progressive and proactive change within minority communities.
